Twenty years before the beginning of Dragonaut, a dragon in the form of an asteroid destroyed Pluto and took up residence in its orbit. This dragon-asteroid was dubbed "Thanatos". While Thanatos stayed on the outskirts of the solar system it was harmless, but its predicted trajectory meant that should it ever move from Pluto's former position, it would be on a collision course with Earth.

One year after the discovery of Thanatos ("nineteen years ago"), a research team began probing the area around New Ogasawara. It was in these waters that the very first dragon egg (originating from Thanatos) was discovered. A key member of this research team, as revealed in episode three, was Kitajima Yuuri. Her first encounter with these creatures was so significant that she proceeded to dedicate the next nineteen years of her life to their study.
