MangaTo coincide with the broadcast of the anime series, a dragonaut -the resonance- manga began serialization in the November 2007 issue of Jump SQ. The print adaptation, written and illustrated by Kinoshita Satoshi, ran for a total of six chapters (the last of which was published in Jump SQ's April 2008 edition). After completing its magazine run, a bound paperback volume was released in May of 2008. While the dragonaut manga carries over themes and characters from the anime series, it executes the plot in a different manner with several key changes. The manga adaptation has not been licensed for US distribution.

Kamishina Jin is a sullen and serious teenager, the only person capable of standing against the invasion of Earth by Type-D dragons. His partner is the mindless but loyal Toa, a dragon Jin has shared a Resonance with. Although Jin treats Toa badly, she respects her master and vows to protect him from all harm. Other Dragonauts and their dragons appear over the course of the series, helping Jin and Toa in their battle to save the planet from BAD DRAGONS :O!

» manga kitajima

KitajimaKitajima Yuuri makes her first appearance in chapter one of the dragonaut manga. She is not only referred to as a doctor (in charge of "Incubation Operations" and a dragon nursery), but also as Jin's superior within the ISDA. Initially harsh in her treatment of the hero, Jin manages to earn Kitajima's respect toward the end of the first chapter after he risks his life to save her from a Type-D dragon. Over the course of the next five chapters Kitajima continues her work with the ISDA, lending her abilities to the Dragonauts whenever they are required.

Kitajima's portrayal in the manga is quite interesting as her anime development is intrinsically linked to the progression of the male characters in her life. As neither Nozaki or Yonamine appear to exist in the manga, Kitajima is able to grow as a character free from their influence. Kinoshita Satoshi portays Kitajima as a serious professional whose focus is on training the Dragonauts to save the world. No relationship drama here, unless you count Nanami one-upping her like a boss. It's a different interpretation — I like it.

» kitajima manga fun facts!!

» Even though though Kitajima speaks poorly of the Dragonauts, it is revealed in chapter three that she was the one who selected them to become Dragonauts in the first place.

» It was Kitajima invented the portable CSS device that protects Jin in the fourth chapter.

» Kitajima had short, bobbed hair at the time of Kamishina Ai's death.

» Kitajima seems to take exception to being underestimated in the manga, snapping "just who do you think I am?" when Sieglinde questions her talent in chapter five.

» Kitajima is referred to almost exclusively as "Kitajima Yuuri". The only character who doesn't use her full name in conversation is Nanami, who calls her sempai (a'la the anime).
