Dragonaut -The Resonance- is full of confusing terms and ideas (and not just because it's a terrible series that you shouldn't be watching in the first place). Let's face it, if you want to understand all this rambling about "Resonances" and crap, you're going to have to brush up on your dragonaut knowledge...

What is a dragon? In Dragonaut a dragon is an alien born from an egg hatched by Thanatos (see the MUTHA FUCKING SPACE DRAGON below). Dragons are essentially creatures without individual identities or drives, just probes and other lovely things to their dear mother (call intergalactic child services). When dragons come into contact with a creature from another species they can perform a Resonance with it. The Resonance process furnishes dragons with emotions and personalities based on what their partner desires most. There are two types of dragons seen in dragonaut - "Earth born" ones (whipped dragons from Earth that are owned by humans) and "Original" ones (creatures sent directly from Thanatos. Superior, but prone to dying).

What is a Resonance? Some kind of magic voodoo soul-bonding astral plane shit. Dragons need to Resonate with humans in order to feel human emotion and take human form. Until they perform a Resonance, dragons are merely an extension of Thanatos - an aspect of her metabrain. The "Communicator" form that a dragon takes is directly linked to whatever Freudian craziness is going on inside their Master's head at the time (as dragons take the shape of whatever their human partner needs most). This explains the abundance of great dragon racks in the series. While a dragon is gifted with human emotions (and a human form) through the Resonance process, whether their emotions are truly their own (or merely artificial) is never made clear.

What is Thanatos? In the Dragonaut universe, Thanatos is the GIANT SPACE DRAGON of UNKNOWN ORIGIN that VAPORISED THE HELL OUT OF PLUTO. She is eventually revealed to be a female creature with the ability to reproduce asexually. She also looks like a huge dragon diorama made by a fourth grader out of nothing but rocks and ear wax. Thanatos sends her eggs down to planets in order hatch them before they're generally assimilated back into her hivemind society. Lonely but very possessive, it's not recommended that you click on her Craigslist ad.

Here are a few terms used in the series. No, I have no idea what the creators were smoking, sry. With any luck this section will help you understand some of the crazy terminology here at OSMJ.

Actualize: A dragon's shift from Communicator to dragon form.
Communicator: A dragon's human guise.
master: A dragon's human partner with whom they've performed a Resonance. Earth-born dragons are bound to their Master's will.

CSS: An electromagnetic field that weakens dragons.
ISDA: Short for International Solarsystem Development Agency, an amalgamated Earth space agency. It has a base on the New Ogasawara (新小笠原) archipelago, in addition to one on the moon.
Tartarus: ISDA facility used for experiments & dragon disposal.
